Finding a laptop with an audiophile-quality sound car (especially on the recording side) isn't so easy. And be careful of cooling fans--my Dell's fan turns on when it wants to and sounds like a 747 carrying 400 overweight Americans, their bags, and 375,000 pounds of fuel on takeoff.

You might look into the direct-to-CD recorders. A local studio uses them for location work, and they work really well. You can then do your edits in CoolEdit with no generational losses.
