I don't believe that a smiling embouchure is by itself a bad thing, except when it is preventing you from producing a quality sound in all registers. What is important is how it sounds, not necessarily what you are doing to create the sound.

Tommy Johnson, during the years he solidified his reputation (1970's) had a slight smiling embouchure. Jim Thatcher, who plays solo horn on nearly every movie out there, puffs out his cheeks when he plays. Both sound amazing, and yet both have what some consider "major problems" with their embouchure. I'm positive they don't have people telling them they need an embouchure change! Of course, everyone must find out what will work for them, but take this into consideration before altering your embouchure.
