This horn has been modified from it's original over-the-shoulder configuration to an upright. The modified lead-pipe is the key. It would look a bit odd and couldn't have been all that comfortable to play (all that tubing above the players head), but money was tight and this was actually done a lot. This image, if truely an ambrotype is on a glass plate. The previous discussion about tin-types is correct, but not necessarily true if it's an ambrotype. I've seen a fair amount of musician imagery in my time and this is one of the nicest. Too bad they couldn't show more of the bell....FWIW
