As a kid I started out on Eb, started playing BBb then CC in high school. When it came time to get a smaller horn I opted for an Eb (a Boosey & Hawkes Imperial) since the only F I played on at the time with a decent low register was Jake's Besson, and it wasn't for sale. Most F's at that time sounded, to me, like a big baritone and I wasn't going for that. I later bought a B&S F - a fine horn but still a lousy low register and later sold it, not wishing to wrestle with those funky notes. Got a Yamaha 321 when they first came out (still have it - great horn), the Willson Eb in '95, and only in the last year another F (a Meinl-Weston from I think around 1980) - same funky low notes but a fine tool for the right job. Bottom line is the Eb is best for most of the work I do.
