The photographs of the mid 19th century (civil war era) are called tin-type. One had to stand still for a good long time because the shudder speed was very long. The other thing about tin-type is that it does produce a reversed image, like in a mirror. To capture words in a photograph, signs that were written in mirror image were produced so that they would be readable in the pictures. So yes, the image is most most likely reversed.
