Can't help with the lesson part of your question, but some comments on the case vs gig bag. Gig bags have great appeal because they make carrying your horn so much easier. They all claim to protect the instrument from dents and scrapes, but in fact they don't provide much protection at all. I have heard them referred to as, "The dent man's best friend." I use a hard case fitted with 10" wheels. I can go up and down flights of stairs (slowly, one step at a time) and cross rough parking lots with relative ease. True, it does make the case somewhat awkward, but face it, a full sized tuba case is awkward, but that's the price of protection. My St Pete has zero dents after 6 years.
