Well, there's not much halfway.
Problem is, I've never heard the kid play nor have I even met him, so I can't say much about what he might need (His parents called me wanted to buy a tuba for him). He's never taken a lesson in his life and so he may think he's playing great, but there's no way to tell. I think I've located a retired bassbone pro back there in the woods--maybe he'll get the kid pointed in the right direction.
And you're absolutely right--a chat with Michael Grose would definitely be in order.
