Actually, your post has more to do with your relationship with the band director than playing the "dragon song", doesn't it? (Personally, I like the 1st suite and Moorside better than the 2nd, but that's neither here nor there).
He didn't hear what he wanted when you played it (was it the solo or the part at the end where the tuba goes into 2/4, but the woodwinds stay in 6/8?). For your own edification, you might ask the director what it was that he didn't like and treat it as useful information. But, like Rick says, you're not going to get a second shot at the part, since you're not a permanent band member and can claim no "squatter's rights".
