The PT-50 and PT-88 have just about the same rim characteristics. Same width etc, but the 50 has a funnel shaped cup, more "american" vs. the "german" rounded cup. The PT-88 is a killer in the low end. I use that one for my rotary BBb. Earlier on I used the PT-50 on a piston valved tuba. If there's a difference, the 50 may give a somewhat "broader" or "fatter" result. The 88 feels more "direct". But both help in getting a dark, commanding sound.
