Rick, you miss my point.
Yes, history's interesting and makes for interesting discussion (heck, I'm married to a history teacher), but it can be a pack of misconceptions and outright lies and often misses the mark.
By fostering the thinking that:
A Arnold Jacobs was a tuba player
B Arnold Jacobs owned a York
C Arnold Jacobs was a marvelous musician
D I am a tuba player
E I own a York
Therefore...(fill in the obvious blank)
We're doing ourselves a disservice by telling our young players "If you want to get anywhere, you have to have a York or York clone". Bill Bell's rotary King may have been something less than wonderful, but I've played a fixed-bell rotary King that was absolutely wonderful. (Didn't Ken Herrick post something about Jacobs and the rotary King some time ago?).
I'd be a lot happier if we spent more time on musicianship aspects than the hardware. Yeah, I enjoy tinkering with horns in my workshop, but 90% of the time I'm playing the same Eb tuba.
Forgive my ranting. I'll try to keep it to a minimum.
