You can imagine getting rid of just about anything if you get ragged on about it enough by someone with power over you, or some other influence. How many people get rid of a pet or a vehicle because they're getting married and the spouse-to-be doesn't like the dog, or the car, or the motorcycle?

Mr. Torchinsky has his own story about Ormandy wanting him to bring a bigger tuba because he didn't think the King was big enough. So, he brought the bell front with him to rehearsal and walked in with the bell front on. Ormandy stopped him and told him that was too big, that was a "band tuba."

The power conductors had in those days was total. Ormandy is the same person who had the recording by the "Torchy Jones Quintet" withdrawn from the market! No musical director could tell a major record label today that they couldn't sell a recording they'd made with an ensemble not using the orchestra's name in their advertising.

I also think Mr. Jacobs was having a bit of fun with the story (like Mel Culberston pulling the leg of everyone in a master class here some years ago).

And, maybe Donatelli benefitted more from a relationship with Conn?
