Donatelli was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

No one is really sure why he sold that York instrument to Arnold Jacobs. Someone else in this thread interviewed Abe Torchinsky (later Philadelphia Orchestra tubaist and a student of both Donatelli and Jacobs) and quoted Mr. Torchinsky as apparently believing that Mr. Donatelli sold the large York to Arnold Jacobs simply because the conductor was giving Mr. Donatelli grief...a common thing to do even today when a conductor starts "riding" an orchestra member (to sell an instrument and buy a different one to appear to have "taken action to solve a problem").
