I'm not convinced the leadpipes on 981 and 982 models are any different in length.
I've played/owned lots of these tubas and never found any difference to the tuning slides etc.

On a 981 the valve-block sits more-or-less parallel to the body of the player. On a 982 the instrument is turned-out more. ie. the leadpipe doesn't go as far around the bell indicating no change in length, just a change in routing.

Case in point.
I've know of many 981 owners including myself who have the leadpipe raised somewhat to match their posture. The more it is raised, the more the tuba is turned out when in playing position (obviously). Mine sits halfway between the two 'stock' heights and consequently the tuba playing-angle is halfway between the two.

I have a lot of time and respect for Klaus but I feel he may be mistaken over this.

Short answer: Dont worry about different leadpipes in length; they're the same.
Also, modern tuning slides 'ought' to fit fine on your 1976 Imperial.
