Not me, but good story nevertheless: San Antonio Symphony (Mike Sanders can correct/embellish me as needed), 1986 or 87, two minutes to curtain on concert with Fantastique programmed. No English horn.
Concert starts without. Berlioz starts without, but in the space between second and third mvts. English hornist, looking very green, sneaks into seat. Plays a gorgeous shepherd's call, then leaves the stage! Much puking commences off stage, but artist returns just in time to play glorious final passage.
Call it dedication, masochism, stupidity: I call it huevos con grande!
