Some years ago, I was playing second trumpet in a fairly large opera orchestra. We were doing several performances of "Tosca" in two different theaters. In one , the pit was too small for us, and we were packed in like sardines. To make things worse (for me), my seat was well back under the low stage apron. I developed a huge feeling of claustrophobia, and damn near lost it. Somehow I got through the performance. The next day at the matinee performance, I took a small dose of Xanax (antianxiety pill) and had no problem.
