Let's not forget bell-front "recording" bell horns. For a while, it seemed as if these would render the upright bell tubas obsolete. But conservatism triumped.

In a similar vein, around the turn of the century, it looked as if the trumpet would be dumped in favor of the cornet. Somewhere I've got a quotation from the time stating that the trumpet is "headed for obsolescence".

Recording-bell tubas originally cost more than upright models; in the used tuba market, a recording bell now renders an instrument much less desirable.

It's like the fashion industry--things come, things go, things come back again.
