I think team sports have a higher goal than winning. If it isn't perfection, then it is working together as a team, as a machine, as a cohesive unit, as an individual. Getting your part or assignment perfect is the goal of an individual on a team, much like it is in a band, orchestra, or chamber group.

Working together and achieving a goal as a group is a character building process. I am not a liberal person, and I believe in the individual and individual achievemnt, but I do see the tremendous value of a team effort whether it be in sports or music (or debate). I think that while sports are sucking much of the money that government schools, they do teach kids wonderful lessons. Of course, some of those lessons are what NOT to do in certain situations, but that is another can-o-worms.
