I agree, mostly. I played one in high school (30 years ago) and never liked it. It always felt stuffy to me. Intonation wasn't bad and it was well made, but the notes just never spoke easily for me. The bell being so far away from the head is the same with the Miraphone 186, VMI 2103, Cerveny 681, 686, 693,... and the St. Pete for that matter, so that's just the nature of many rotary tubas. Other people have a completely different reaction to them, so I just attribute it to playing style. I don't like them, but that doesn't mean that they won't work well for someone else.
