Tubas haven't suffered as a result, either. (France, however, has always been tainted.) Germany is certainly ultra-socialist, but they have a couple of saving graces: GREAT BEER and FINE MUSIC. The Hofbrauhaus is one of the places tourists are accepted. Some places off the beaten path are not welcoming at all to non-Germans. Even if your ancestors are German, you have a German surname, and you speak kleine Deutche.
