In Memphis, there used to be a wrought iron sign at the street in front of the extremely formidable First Baptist Church.
On the sign appeared the church's name and address. Below it, the name of the *white-haired preacher, who had a PhD in "something" (?) and also a "Doctor of Divinity" degree:
R. Paul Caudill, PhD.DD
Being about nine years old and seeing that sign for about the 400th time, I asked my father, "Dad, what does that mean?"
My father replied - without missing a beat, "fuddy-duddy".
Needless to say, it left me scratching my head and my mother laughing uncontrollably.
