Chester Schmidt used circular breathing quite frequently. In fact, one of his foundations of teaching is the "concept of continuous air flow (exhalation)". I heard a lecture he did on this at IU Bloomington many years ago. Watching him with the Boston Symphony you could tell he was using it but the phrase connection was flawless.
I have used this successfully in auditions for the fast lick from Straus Til Eulenspiegel where you do the run and then have to hit the high A and hold it for 12 bars or so. It is also excellent for the Bach Cello Suites.
