Some pieces of music seem to be able to survive sloppy performance better than others. I've heard the Holst many times, including an early recording conducted by the composer, which was performed by an amateur orchestra. It had the expected technical flaws, but the energy was there. It's just hard to play this music passively.
Contrast that to the effort that it takes to put energy into, say, Mozart, heh, heh.
