The only convertible tuba I have played was poorly constructed and 2nd partial BBb was closer in-tune 2nd valve rather than open. I freely admit that my experience is limited with convertible's and there are probably better ones. If cost is an issue (when isn't it?) then you might consider bell-front Kings (2340/2341). These are more awkward than sousa's but probably no-less than a convertible, can pull double duty (marching/concert), and have a preferred sound to convertibles (in my limited experience). In college we carried 20j's and the sound was great, at least to my ears. Carrying 20j's is probably too much to expect from a high-schooler (or anybody for that matter).
