Great idea! I hadn't ever thought of using a flugelhorn on the 2nd part. It might work if you've got a good player. You also might try and find rotary valve trumpets or, better yet, cornets. These are really mellow sounding horns and, if you can find rotary cornets, might be the best option. The tuba part doesn't really specify an Eb. It could just as well be for BBb which was a very common instrument in Russia. I also like your idea about using a tenorhorn. This might be less problematic than a true altohorn. For me, the biggest improvement is the switch from trombone to euphonium. It works like a dream! Enjoy!
