sousaphone for concert band

Howdy fellow tubenetters:

Perhaps some will consider this blasphemous, but the post below about convertible tubas got me thinking. Why do Band Directors feel they must have concert tubas or convertibles for indoors? Many would rather use a small crappy student model level convertible horn rather than a good King or Conn sousaphone. Actually in my HS we used only sousas inside and out. I mean if you have one or two tuba players in a big band, I think it better to have sousas with the forward bell (assuming of course the player can play with taste and musicality). In fact in my elementary band that is what I use. I have two nice brass sousas on Wenger sousa chairs. I can usually hear the bass part and the kids think they are pretty cool. Now obviously if you can afford to have good sousas and good concert tubas, that would be best. But if you can have only one horn, I would go with a nice sousa, for both indoors and out. That's my story and I'm sticking to it....
