How are the Apperson mutes different from the mutes that Nate Griffith produces (or used to produce?). Two circles of redwood, with a hole bored through the smaller end, linked by a cone of pop-riveted aluminum. It seems like just about anyone with access to a bandsaw and a power drill could make one of these for about $20 in less than an hour from readily-available materials.

This is not to denegrate the efforts of Messrs. Apperson and Griffith (they provide a valuable service), but I don't see why one of these couldn't be an easy "do-it-yourself" project.
