Here is a question...do you find that even the great trumpet players like Bud Herseth play out of tune??? Trumpet players have a DISTINCT disadvantage. Their horns only have 3 valves. The first and third valve slides on intermediate and professional trumpets are constructed to be loose enough that with the flick of a finger you can make a rather easy change in the pitch. I've found that most of the professional tubas I have played and/or seen have easily adjustable 1st and (usually) 4th valve slides.

As for the 16th note test...I highly doubt (but I could be wrong) that Bud Herseth would adjust a slide (1st or 3rd) during a rapid 16th note scale.

"I contend that no one can pull slides that fast without slopping up the sound."

I feel it is up to us as musicians to learn the tendencies of our horns and and to compensate accordingly with our embouchures.

That's my $0.02....
