I think this is what Gene Pokorny is possibly referring to on his orchestral excerpts cd. He says something to the effect of spending your life climbing a ladder, only to find that when you reach the top, your ladder is leaning against the wrong wall.
Or worse yet, that the ladder never really ends and you feel constantly stuck in the middle and you spend your life wondering why no one ever gave you the props you deserved; unfortunately sometimes called "Teacher syndrome" because of the number of educators that earn a paycheck while they get more bitter about their poor lot in life. This is happily the exception rather than the rule, but it happens frequently enough that it has become a cliche.
