Trucking companies give huge discounts to their regular commercial customers. When I bought a 25J with cases, the wife of the guy selling the tuba (who just happened to be shipping supervisor at a large electrical distributor) had the guys at work strap the cases (with plenty of carboard padding) to a pallet and ship it out on the next truck to Oregon. It set me back $70 and would have only cost $35 had I picked it up at the local freight depot.

So if you know someone at the right place, truck freight can be quite inexpensive.
