There are two distinct but frequently overlapping hobbies: Tuba playing, and tuba collecting. If I identify myself as a tuba collector, then nobody is at all surprised to discover that I have many tubas. It wouldn't be a collection if I didn't. I also have many antique clocks, and an abundance of bicycles, both of which I also collect when I see something that fits into a gap for the right price.
But if I tell people that I'm a tuba player or that I ride bikes, they will think my collections completely over the top. They will laugh at me, and then go home to admire their own collections of art posters, or computer junk, or fishing rods, or guns, or Fiesta bowls, or Navajo rugs--you get the idea.
