It's interesting that you mention your feelings on the King, because when I bought my 56J, my (very close) second choice was the King.

I think that it's prudent to play-test any horn that you buy. Even Willson and B&S turn out a POS once and awhile. If you absolutely can't, definitely get a trial period. I suspect that the Conns will be reasonably consistent, although I think that mine has a better high register than most. But I haven't seen enough of a difference in other ones that I've tried to sacrifice the consistently great low and mid-register sound of a 56J. But hedge your bets, anyway.

I have an Altieri bag, but it doesn't really fit that well. It holds the horn, but the 4th valve wrap prevents it from fitting all the way to the bottom of the bag. I'm fine with it, though. Don't bother with the Conn bag.
