An interesting debate. As to the tubist to Dizzy's left, it may wrong to assume that the man is holding his right hand in playing position, (as the photo was surely posed...I doubt that anyone was actually playing). The man may have been holding the instrument in the most comfortable way possible for the picture. Also, the picture dates from 1934, (and is available on e*** at the moment) when there were less rotary horns in use in the USA. The bell looks detachable to me and the angle of the recording bell reminds me of some Holtons that I've seen. I can't help but think that the tubist would have been amused to think of us debating this point almost 70 years later!
