I agree that their should be breaths in the music, but an oboist can play for 3 hours without taking a breath and has to learn to expel air quietly through their nose so they don't suffer from oxygen depletion while playing.

What?! I have never heard of this, and have completed my Master's Degree in performance. What you might be thinking is that we have to plan places to exhale, as well as inhale (usually noted in music as a backwards breath mark). But I have never heard of an oboist exhaling through their nose, except when they choose to circular breathe (usually unneccesarily).
