Having spent some time with an ophicleide, knowing the Wagner piece, and being about 99% certain that that piece has been played on ophicleide quite a few times, I thought it might prove to be a provocative answer...

...There would be far less likelihood of the conductor falling off of the podium when the "tuba" part player attempted the first few very soft notes, for example.
