Karl seems to be right on about all of that stuff. I can attest to it, because I own a Marzan BBb tuba. I have had it for three years. All four of the rotary valves have at least one tuning slide. The main tuning slide is vertical and very easy to reach and move. I always play with one hand on the valves and the other on the main tuning slide, so I can tune every note. It's quite handy.

Karl mentioned the string linkage for the valves. My tuba does have this. I contemplated getting it converted to the nylon-ball style of linkage, but never felt it was necessary.

I bought my tuba from a guy in Massachusetts who said it was about thirty years old, that was in 1998. He hardly ever played and said that he wanted to learn the flute instead. I was okay with that as long as he let me buy his tuba.

Nick, or anyone else, feel free to e-mail me about other questions at marzan122(AT)hotmail.com.

Best wishes,

Matt
