Ken posted an excellent explination of sleep apnea below, and I can only add that a couple of years of severe slepp apnea (yep, a couple of years averaging minutes instead of hours of REM sleep per night) was an experience I would never wish on a worst enemy.

As for your thoughts about machine assisted circular breathing, I can only suggest that part of the reason CPAP therapy works for me is that the air pressure causes me to tense the muscles in my mouth and throat to prevent the air from entering my nose and exiting back out my mouth. In my experience, conciously allowing pressurized air to follow this circle (nose to mouth) is a VERY uncomfortable sensation. I don't recommend it.
