I agree with MR.Random Thoughts. I especially like the recordings of the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony with Chester Schmitz. Most of those recordings of the early 90s and before I think were done with his AlexanderCC tuba, and some with his Yorkbrunner. I think of the Alexander sound as dense and dark with bite and core with alotta character. Yorkbrunners have a nice dark, round and smooth sound, but I kinda like the Alexander better. It's very unique sounding. I especially enjoy my Deutsche Grammophon recording of the Boston Symphony Orchestra recorded in 2/1971 in Boston's Symphony Hall with Michael Tilson Thomas cunducting Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.1 "Winter Dreams" and Debussy's Images. You should hear Chester on his Alex tuba in the 4th movement of the Tchaik. Whatta sound!
