Stereotypically the 6/4 size York, Conn, and Holtons come to mind as "American" horns although each company had or has smaller horns that are very nice. I would dare say 1/4 of a horn's tone is easily controlled by the player. I played a Rudy Meinl 4/4 and a Conn 24J for years. I could make the Rudy sound nice and smooth to an extent but the Conn sounded smooth without any effort. I prefered the Rudy during louder brassy pieces and played the Conn when low volumes with lot's of root were needed. The Conn was huge and could be played loudly but I personally I didn't like it for that task, especially after I heard a recording of us playing in an especially dead hall where I kicked it up a notch (yes I watch Emeril).

American sound -- pushrod 16 valve 350 cubic inch v8
German sound -- overhead quad cam 32 valve 3.0 liter v12

Both will make your hair stand on end.
