Do they enjoy listening to you play? Do you have an interesting sound and make interesting musical statements? What is the overall effect of your performances? Don't try to make overall judgements based on a single component such as a judgement call as to what the sound should be. A good sound can be of many different flavors. Listen to Gail Williams, then listen to Thomas Bacon. Two excellent horn players, but with very different sounds. Which one is "better" or more "correct". Neither. They both sound great.

Now, if your sound is not pleasing or convincing to your audience, then that is independent of it's flavor.
