Reportedly, Bud Herseth (recently retired as principle trumpet of the CSO for over 40 years) was in a severe automobile accident early in his career, losing several front teeth and really tearing up his lip. Six weeks later he was back, playing in the symphony. He said his lip was completely numb, but he played by sound, not feel, and was able to get the sound he wanted.
