sounds like you are taking the right approach, EVERYBODY will have a couple of notes that are harder to remember than others. the suggestion to right in only SELECT notes is a good one, but be careful that you dont overdo it.
Even your old band music is good for reading, but the reason we should stick to known music at first is to insure our ears will correct us if we hit a clam. You might be ready for sightreading, but try to find something that is very tonal, without many accidentals.
