Sorry, that last sentence was really poorly written, and I should have known better. What I meant to say was not to go whole-hog on improvising, because you need the technical and musical discipline that traditional instruction provides, while improvisation's pure creativity is liberating to the mind and the spirit. It can give you the mental break that you need. Also, if you learn improvisation by properly learning chords and scales, and if you work at training your ear and understanding why jazz players play what they do, your understanding of classical technique and performance will be enhanced.
