It depends of the playing you plan on doing. If you are serious about orchestral playing any of the horns will do, but only the 5/4 and 6/4 horns will do. For auditions, a lot of guys prefer smalller tubas in the early rounds and move to the big stuff with the section and the orchestra. The 5/4 is the most popular horn, as it does well in many settings even though I feel that it is a bit much for most college level chamber groups.
