The PTs offer a broad range of tubas, but they are relatively consistently made. While I agree that the pt-6s are excellent mid/upper quality tubas, they are a little big for a 1st tuba. PT 3s or especially 4s are wonderfully balanced horns to start out with.

The pt-6s and 7s are great professional horns (I'm looking to sell my 7p, but with great regret that I can't keep it) and would be worth looking in to down the road.

Personally, I would recommend sticking to the rotary valves for the smaller tubas. This will generally darken the sound and the Perantucci/ Meinl Weston pistons can be touchy if you aren't keeping the horn clean and using the right valve oil.
