I have made two different styles of gig bags for my son. The first one I used Marine weight vinyl for the outside and Nylon for the lining. I made it much like a large duffle bag with straps across the bottom & velcro straps for closure. I lined thebottom wit a closed cell sleeping pad cut in half & doubled, and stuffed the sides with ployester fiberfill. The sewing machine hated sewing it, and when it was finished, it weighed about as much as my son's tuba.

I later made a top loading bag with shoulder straps out of bargin weight vinyl lined with nylon and once again using closed cell sleeping pads as the padding. The materials including straps, buckles, and elastic ran about $70.00. The machine did not object to sewing the lighter weight vinyl, and the only problem seems to be that the shoulder straps were placed a little too low, and the fabric is tearing where they attach. Otherwise, it seems to have turned out fairly well.
