Hey Philip,
Those are two totally different horns in sound and playing style. If you were rich, I'd suggest getting one of each (preferably from you know where). They both could do the same job, but the Conn 52J would favor quintet use and the Alexander 163 would favor larger ensemble use. I see the Alexander more as a rotary option against the awesome Meinl Weston 2155 or 2000. Both are great playing, small 5/4 size, horns. Again we must add, "Individual results may vary."
