I used to substitue for an electric bass in a recording sessions playing rock tunes. The best sound I was able to get came from an AKG D-112. The frequency response is great (20 Hz - 20 kHz). This microphone is used primarily for kick drums and bass guitars. It also gives you a really clean sound. The downside, of course, is that this is a professional stage mic and retails for around $300. If you want to spend that much, try one out.
