I would highly recommend taking a train. You won't have to check your horn: it would just go in a compartment at the bottom of your passenger train, where you would place it yourself. Any decent case should hold up quite well on Amtrak. Traveling by train is also quite nice, if time isn't an issue. You could come right into Penn or Grand Central and transportation would be available everywhere.
