Steel springs would last longer and if customized (i.e., tapered to fit the bottom of the piston on one end and the inside of the bottom valve cap on the other end), would probably stay in place (center of casing), thereby reducing the possibility of extraneous noise. This is what my favorite repair guru told me, anyway. As to the swapping of parts, one would have to question (1) the validity of such an accusation and, if validated, (2) the reason for such a practice. Personally, I can't see how such a practice would benefit the consumer, so I'd have to conclude that it would be for financial gain by the distributor. Ouch!!
