I have used a shotgun cleaning swab (not brush) with one section of cleaning rod.
I wrap the swab (20 gage?) with cheese cloth or a heavy paper towel and use lighter
fluid as a solvent. Works great but keep away from fire or flame!
Rather than trying to thin your grease (which probably won't last) I'd try a thinner
lubricant such as Binak 495, or have a repairman polish the slides to reduce the friction.
